ASUS ROG Strix Scope II 96 Review

I wanted a keyboard that works for both gaming and work, and I didn’t want to lose the numpad — but I also didn’t want a full-size keyboard taking over my desk. The ROG Strix Scope II 96 came in clutch: it gives me a compact layout that saves space, keeps the important keys and numpad, and still includes wireless and RGB. I’ve also recently added SteelSeries PrismCaps to make the RGB pop even more.

Quick verdict

7/10 – The build is OK but doesn’t quite compare to more premium keyboards. That said, the RGB is great (especially with PrismCaps), and the ability to switch between wireless, USB, and Bluetooth is genuinely handy. The key clicks feel great and as a daily keyboard for over a year it’s been reliable and never let me down. It works for pretty much any game, although heavy RPG/MMO players may miss dedicated hotkeys.

Best for: anyone who wants a compact keyboard with a numpad for work + gaming, plus wireless and RGB.

Not for: anyone chasing “end-game” build quality or needing dedicated macro/hot keys.

Tested for: daily work + gaming use for over a year (wireless + wired).

Key features I actually use

  • 96% layout keeps the numpad without taking over the desk.
  • Wireless, USB, and Bluetooth switching depending on what I’m doing.
  • RGB looks great (even better with PrismCaps fitted).
  • Linear switches that aren’t too noisy — ideal for working conditions.
  • Magnetic palm rest that actually stays in place.

Pros

  • Most of the keys you’d expect from a full-size keyboard without the full-size footprint.
  • Battery life and reliability have been spot on.
  • Magnetic palm rest is genuinely comfortable and easy to attach/remove.
  • Reasonable price for a wireless 96% RGB keyboard.
  • PBT keycaps show no signs of fading.
  • Linear switches aren’t too noisy — great for work.

Cons

  • Build quality doesn’t match more premium keyboards.
  • Software hasn’t been great — sometimes awkward to adjust RGB.
  • No dedicated hot keys.

Final verdict

At the time, as a 96% keyboard, there weren’t many better alternatives — and considering how well it’s performed over the last year, it’s been reliable and never let me down. The build could be slightly better and the software definitely needs improvement. If I was buying again, I’d probably look around at alternatives first, but I still think it’s a solid option if you want a compact keyboard with a numpad, wireless, and RGB.

Next update: I’ll revisit this after another year and update the score if anything changes.
